What's your greatest treasure? (Matthew 13:44-46)

What things do you value most?

There are plenty of things in life that we love and value. There isn't anything wrong with loving the things God gives us when we use them in they way God intended, but there is something wrong when we love creation over the creator.

Jesus makes it very clear in this passage that having utter commitment and joy is the only right response to being offered the kingdom of heaven.

Why doesn’t Jesus tell us these details in this parable?
Because, it doesn’t matter, that’s not important, but what is important is that both these people had a response to finding the greatest thing they will ever be given. And it was a response of devotion by putting everything else that they own second.

Do you put everything second to Jesus and his authority?

The kingdom is worth giving everything up for. Being excited and then committing everything to God is actually the only appropriate response. If you claim to truly understand how amazing this is that we have Jesus as our Lord, then your response couldn’t be anything else.

In Search For...

L - O - V - E

This week, guest speaker Nath Sandon came and helped us think through a really familiar passage:

John 3:16

God really does love us so much. The depth of his love is amazing. The extent of his love seen in the action of his son is profound.

The Parable of the Weeds

(Matthew 13: 24-30, 36-43)

This week we looked at the Parable of the Weeds...

Remember the group activity we played out?

Who are we? Where are we? Who are we with?

We are the good seeds, children of the Kingdom, planted by Jesus in a world where the devil has also planted weeds.

What is God’s response?

Remember how we attempted to kill the weeds in the group activity... Instead of killing the weeds and letting the wheat grow; we killed both wheat and weeds. Due to this God is waiting for the right time to harvest the field.

Harvest time...

At harvest time the wheat and weeds will be sorted. The wheat will shine like the sun in the kingdom of the Father and the weeds will weep and gnash their teeth in the fiery furnace.

In the Kingdom

This term we're looking at Matthew 13.

Matthew 13 is all about the Kingdom of God, but Jesus talks about it in parables.

The first parable (you can read it here) is great because not only do we get a story about a farmer and his farm (and we all know I love farms), and also the actual explanation about the parable but we also get insight into why Jesus tells parables.

As the sower plants the seeds, there are many different responses.

This week we learnt that to be part of the Kingdom we need to be serious about seeking God. We need to be genuine and committed.
Those who listen to what Jesus says, those who are in the Kingdom, will not keep the great news of the Kingdom to themselves but will want others to know about it also. Those who are in the Kingdom will tell others about Jesus even if it means getting hassled. Those who are in the Kingdom will put God first above everything else, above all other stuff and things in this world.
